With its bold colour palette and architecturally striking features, Arklen’s remarkable East Fremantle custom build is designed to stand out where other homes blend in.

Set on an above-average 511sqm block in a beautiful heritage area, this single-storey home originated from an old duplex site and was brought to life with help from Darklight Design.

The home sees expansive face brick play a starring role in the facade, melding beautifully with blocks of mahogany panelling and contrasting heavily with a standout grey-white retaining feature wall.

These external materials become artistically distinctive against the charcoal black corrugated walls that connect the strips of red face brick, and are thoughtfully embedded with glowing downlights.

Also heavy with pattern is the patch of grass that greets the front door, growing around and through a lattice design.

In the home’s backyard, large, nature-toned character pavers form the foundation for the alfresco area, which is shaded by a stunning black louvre roof patio peppered with high-hanging retro lights.

Perfect for entertaining no matter the weather or time of day, the substantive design connects effortlessly through to an open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge area, characterised by light cream walls and the same sleek, seamlessly embedded downlights.

In keeping with a simplistic and intriguing warehouse-style aesthetic, burnished concrete floors run smooth and polished from the living areas into the hallway, which is brightened with black-panelled windows that showcase a small courtyard space with greenery.

Arklen Managing Director Mark Diedricks said the passageway, which links the front bedrooms to the rear living areas, was his favourite part of the house, a place he admitted was tough to describe.

“This is a hard one to pigeonhole, really,” he said.

“We like to look at is as bespoke.

“The approach or goal was to combine sustainability and luxury.”

The unique home has elements of industrial chic, particularly with its generous use of exposed brick and grey-hued concrete.

The unusual flavour is present throughout the home’s stylish layout, which includes four bedrooms, two bathrooms, one powder room, a cellar and a scullery.

The bathrooms in particular are dramatic spaces, incorporating another exposed brick feature wall, snow-white brick-style tiling on the remaining walls and a deep-grey, textured floor.

Striking black elements such as the faucets, wall-mounted showerhead and towel rack pop in the room, as does the standalone bathtub, light timber grain cabinetry and round-edged mirror.

Mr Diedricks said the day bed, garage timber feature, custom electric sliding gate, secret wine cellar and internal face brick were additional elements that elevated the charm of the home.

“This is a family home,” he said.

“Our young clients are expecting their first child and will be undertaking the journey of growing a family in this house.

“The outdoor area is amazing with a custom pergola to allow north access, and there’s plenty of space.

“Meanwhile, the front garden was designed with practicality and style in mind.

“The lot is quite narrow, and to have usable car space was a top priority.

“The combination of the lawn, the lawn pavers, the grey concrete and the native garden provide enough contrast and will mature to fill the space.”

The East Fremantle home was expertly designed with a variety of solar-passive principles and brings pockets of welcome natural light, green scenes and soft breezes inside, in part thanks to high windows which allow northern sun to filter through to the rooms.

Homeowners Mel Burgess and Tom Jelenich said the East Fremantle abode was their dream home.

“There were a number of challenges involved with our design, including our awkwardly shaped block, very narrow frontage (8.4m) and lots of council bylaws to account for,” Mrs Burgess said.

“But an amazing job was done and we are thrilled with the home that was designed for us.”
